Possessive / Modifier (の)
〜の
The particle の connects nouns to show possession, affiliation, or modification — similar to 'of' or apostrophe-s in English.
Pattern
Noun1 + の + Noun2
Explanation
The particle の connects two nouns, where the first noun modifies or describes the second. Its most basic use is showing possession: '私の本' (my book), '田中さんの車' (Tanaka's car).
Beyond possession, の connects nouns in many ways: affiliation ('大学の学生' — university student), material ('木の机' — wooden desk), location ('東京の大学' — university in Tokyo), and description ('日本語の本' — Japanese book).
の can be chained: '私の友達の車' (my friend's car). The order is important — the modifier always comes before の and the modified noun comes after.
