Japanese uses specific counters for different shapes: 枚 (flat), 本 (long), 個 (small round), 匹 (small animals). Each has sound changes with certain numbers.

Common Mistakes
Wrong
ペンを三ほんください。
Correct
ペンを三本ください。(さんぼん)
本 changes sound: いっぽん, にほん, さんぼん. 3 is さんぼん, not さんほん.
Wrong
猫を三ひきかっています。
Correct
猫を三匹飼っています。(さんびき)
匹 changes sound: いっぴき, にひき, さんびき. 3 is さんびき, not さんひき.
